Brek-ek-ek-ek-coax-coax... and welcome to Roman Keyline Blog! You have just crossed the river Styx and are ready to join Aeschylus and Euripides in a great line contest. Fortunately for you, you don't have to invent your own lines. Most of the time, I'll just ask you to pick out a great line from whatever Roman writer we happen to be studying in History 422 and explain why this line is key to understanding the whole work or particularly worth remembering and applying to real life.
For this first post, you don't need to have done any of the readings. Just introduce yourself and explain why are taking this course.
Hello Everyone! My name is Nile Hesson and I am entering my 5th semester at college. I, as like the most of us, have had an interesting journey to this point. I was born in Iowa City and lived there for 3 years before moving up to Minneapolis for a solid 10. I also have lived in Cleveland, Ohio and currently live around Phoenix, Arizona. My first two years of college took me to Cerro Coso Community College in Ridgecrest, CA; where I got my associates in History and played collegiate baseball. I now venture over here to Aberdeen, South Dakota by way of baseball, but I'm really starting to like the area of Aberdeen. One thing that makes me happy is baseball (obviously), but History as a whole as well; I am in fact a History Education major. If there is one thing that makes me more mad than anything, it is definitely losing...I cannot stand it. I want to be the best at everything that I do. I have never really liked Ancient Rome history, but I am taking this class for credits, and the hopes of that changing my viewpoint on Ancient Rome. I'm more than excited to start this course especially with the rest of you, and I'm curious to see where we can end up by the end of the semester. I look forward to learning more about you guys in the coming days as well!

DeleteHowdy everyone, my name is Jesse Williams. I've lived in Aberdeen South Dakota my entire life and hopefully plan on moving from here to do my masters in a year and a half. I like it here but change is always nice. I want to get my masters in History so I can become a History professor at a college. I want to specialize in either Viking History or Medieval European History I haven't fully decided yet. I'm taking this course more or less to get my History Major. But I've always enjoyed taking classes with Marmorstein and whenever I get the chance to do a class with him I will. My friend Logan is also taking this class and I enjoy doing classes with him. I have done at least one or two projects on Ancient Rome and I'm excited to learn more about Rome this semester.
ReplyDeleteHello everyone, I'm Lauren Bland! I'm from Pierre, SD, but I am originally from a small town in Alabama. I moved up here with my family when I was starting middle school. This is my second year at Northern, and I am a history and Spanish double major with a minor in public history. I hope to get my masters in Library Sciences after my 4 years here and eventually land a career in the archives or a museum of some sort. I've taken a Marmorstein class each semester I've been here, so I figured I might as well keep it going. Also, I have always been interested in Rome and how this powerful empire came to be, so I am excited to take this course with all of y'all!

Hi there, I'm Cole Holmes. I am from Aberdeen and have been at Northern for a few years. I am a Music Education Major and decided about two years ago that I wanted to take some extra history classes and with that, I added the minor degree. I will graduate in the Spring and student teach next fall. Ancient Rome sounded like something I should know, and it interests me, so I put it on the schedule. I believe next semester I will be taking Ancient Israel with Art, looking forward to that.
ReplyDeleteHi everyone, I'm Logan Hinman. I live over in Groton right now, but have also lived in Alaska, Wyoming, South Carolina, and North Dakota. I am a junior here at NSU and am a History Major. I hope to be able to work in a museum one day, as I really enjoy learning about ancient history, especially ancient Egypt. My friend Jesse is also taking this class, as we both enjoy learning about history. I look forward to learning about ancient Rome this semester as it had a massive impact on many civilizations, including Egypt.
ReplyDeleteHi everyone! My name is Rebecca Loehrer but please call me Becca! I am currently in my 5th year here at NSU after many major changes. I am currently a General Studies major with a minor in International Studies. I am very close to graduating with just a few classes left in both my major and minor so I will be graduating in this coming May. I am in this class because my advisor said that she could get approval for this class to count as one of the last two classes I need to finish up my minor. I am excited to take this class and hope to have great discussions with all of you!
ReplyDeleteHello, I am Collin Getty. I am a freshman here at NSU and I am a History Major. I have lived in Aberdeen my whole life. I am here because I really enjoy learning about ancient civilizations, and am excited to learn about Rome. I am excited to go through this class and learn with you all!
ReplyDeleteMy name is Haylee Bohnet, and I'm currently a freshman. I moved here from Volga, South Dakota, where I had lived for my whole life up until this point. If you're unfamiliar, it's a small town in southeast South Dakota. The kind of place where K-12 was in the same building. I decided to come to NSU because its dead center between my parents and my grandparents, but still far enough away from each to have my own life outside of them.
ReplyDeleteOne thing that makes me happy is 70's/80's music, specifically Billy Joel. He's one of my favorite musicians, and his music always improves my mood.
One thing that makes me upset is people who are willfully ingnorant. For example, people who *know* they don't know as much about a person or topic as they should, and willingly do nothing about it.
I am taking this course because I love to learn about all types of ancient history. Whenever I got the chance in high school, I'd write my project papers on ancient history, and I'm even learning Norwegian in order to learn more about Norse mythology, another one of my favorites. I took a class a few years ago called World Civilizations, which covered nothing but ancient history up to the fall of the Roman Empire. However, this class only gave a brief summary of the several ancient empires, and I wanted a deeper look into Rome specifically.

Hello everyone! My name is Kristin Johnson and this is the start of my 7th semester of college. I graduated from Legacy High School in Bismarck, ND in Spring of 2020, went to Bismarck State College and graduated in Spring of 2022 with my Associate's degree, and then transferred here to get my Bachelor's degree in Secondary History Education.
ReplyDeleteOne thing that makes me happy is reading/crocheting/doing crafty things.
One thing that makes me mad is people who do annoying things on purpose and don't have enough self control to not do those things.
I am in this course because it sounded interesting, I need credits for my degree, and I don't have to be in Usitalo's class this semester.
