How often do you think About Rome (extra credit blog)
You may have come across the recent discussion of how often men think about Rome. Here's a chance for you to weigh in. How often do you think about Rome? Why?
I recently, when going through Instagram Reels, found this and thought it was very funny. Before this class I would say I hardly ever thought about Rome but now being in this class I think about Rome at least once a day. I understand how these men think about Rome though because of how influential Rome was to the entire world. They provided so much infrastructure and political influences that have affected the entire world.
I have always been fascinated by the Romans and the gorgeous literary works that came from their times. The influence of poets such as Ovid were great influences for later great poets, such as William Shakespeare. I also found the lives the Romans inspirational and majestic. I also had a friend that was particularly interested in the military strategies of Rome, and our conversations on that would also cause Rome to creep into my mind. All this is just to say that I have thought about Rome quite often throughout my life.
If I’m going to be 100% honest, I try not to ever think about Rome. Sure, not too long ago, I was introduced to Rome by a variety of people including teachers, but never really fully in-depth. One of the reasons I took this class was because I wanted to learn more about this Empire, and as you say in the lectures, a very important part of history. I think more recently I’ve seen more Rome on TikTok or even Instagram, whether because it’s the new trend, or because of Google knowing that I’m taking the class :). My roommate the other day was watching the Rome documentary on Netflix and was extremely interested in it, and I recommend him take your class. I think one of the reasons why I try not to think of Rome is because there are so many things that makeup Rome, and so many things to try and remember, and if I do that, I’ll become overwhelmed and it will be difficult for me to enjoy it. Some of the individuals we learn about are quite fascinating, and I am really glad that I took this class, moving forward, I’m going to try and continue to enjoy it and learn more about Rome! - Nile Hesson
I find this assumption to be very amusing, and I've asked multiple men in my life if they think about Rome often. Their answers have differed--for example, my father said he thinks about Rome at least three times a week, while my boyfriend said he only thinks about it when I bring up this class, haha.
Personally, I think about Rome quite often--even before this class. I've always found the history of Rome to be rather interesting. If you think about it, you're able to find a reason to think about Rome in almost any situation--while reading the Bible, driving down a road, washing your hands, etc. Rome really does make up a lot of history and is responsible for many modern advancements in technology. -Lauren Bland
When I first saw this trend on Instagram I thought it was funny, especially because it seems like most of the men who get asked the question think about the Roman Empire a lot more than I would have guessed.
Personally, before this class, I though about the Roman Empire at least 2-3 times a week, but that's probably because I used to read encyclopedias about ancient mythologies for fun in school. Ancient mythologies are my favorite thing to learn about, specifically Norse and Celtic mythology. I'm actually learning Norwegian right now to read more sources on Norse mythology. -Haylee Bohnet
I had my sisters ask me this question as it began circulating through social media, and I would have to say that I think about Rome at least around once a month. I find ancient history to be really fascinating, especially older civilizations like Rome, Egypt, and Greece because of their mythology. I think my love for ancient history ties to my love of fantasy, as looking back at how the world worked so long ago is so displaced from how our world is today. Learning about Roman gladiators or the Egyptian Book of the Dead seems so distant when it comes to our world today, almost like fantasy.
I think about the Roman Empire almost daily, though before this class it was maybe a couple times a week to a couple weeks out of the month. A guy can see a lot of Rome in America which is why it is significant to me. Also, if you believe the creation story which dates the world at around 6,000 years, the Roman Empire, lasting roughly 2,000 years is a great part of our worlds history; not to mention that roughly the first 1,600 years of Earths history was lost to the flood and all that remains of it in documentation is the book of Genesis, which was not written during that time and discloses very little from that time. So the Roman Empire is heavily influential on our Western world and significant in that it lasted a long time.
